About the Band
The Shelby Community Band formed in 1973, and has been in continuous existence for 50 years! The band is made of mostly adult musicians, and encompasses nearly every age group. It is comprised of people with careers such as teachers, mechanics, therapists, retirees, and people in the trades. Members come from a wide range of experience, from high school, college, and beyond.
We are a non-auditioned group. However, placement is determined by experience and needs of the ensemble. Anyone who plays a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument is welcome! There is an expectation of a basic foundation in music for each member, including ability to read music.
The Shelby Community Band presents between 6-8 performances each year; including fall, Christmas, and spring concerts; the annual Memorial Day Performance in Shelbyville; and several concerts/festivals in the parks in and around Shelby County.
The Shelby Community Band is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit Arts organization in Shelby county. We strive to bring great music to the greater Shelby county area.
The purpose of this organization shall be to foster and promote the concept of the adult community band. In implementing this purpose, the organization’s goals shall be:
1. To contribute positively to the musical environment of the area it serves
2. To make music for people, engendering pride in our community
3. To provide an opportunity for individual musical expression and growth among the membership
4. To stimulate interest in the creation of community bands through participation in music festivals and performances
5. To reaffirm the community band position in American music by broadening appreciation of the range and depth of music which only a concert band can offer.
About the Conductor

Angelo Anton is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Shelby Community Band. He has been the Conductor of the ensemble since November of 2019. Since becoming director, he has actively recruited for the band, growing the membership. He, along with the board, developed new by-laws and led the band into becoming its own 501c3 non-profit. In 2022, Angelo commissioned a new piece of music by Rossano Galante for the Shelby Community Band’s 50th anniversary to be premiered in 2023. He commissioned a second work for the band in summer of 2023 by Peter Felice and it will premiere in spring of 2024.
Mr. Anton received his Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Butler University in 2012, having studied conducting with Dr. Robert Grechesky. While at Butler, he was the Graduate Assistant. As Graduate Assistant, his duties included serving as Principal Trombone of the Wind Ensemble, conducting in rehearsals and concerts, and coordinating the All-Star High School Honors Band, and the American Bandmasters Association conference. He also assisted with undergraduate conducting courses. Angelo received his Bachelor of Music Education in 2006 from the University of Indianapolis. His conducting teachers at UIndy were Dr. Thomas McCauley and Dr. Shelley Axelson. While at UIndy, he performed in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Chamber Orchestra. He also assisted with the Campus Band.
Angelo has participated as conductor in various conducting symposia, having the chance to study with Professors Eugene Corporon, Jerry Junkin, Rodney Winther, and Gary Hill; and Dr. Craig Kirchoff and Dr. Mallory Thompson. He has been a guest conductor of the UIndy Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Indiana Wind Symphony. He has taught band throughout Central Indiana. Angelo has worked with concert, jazz, and chamber ensembles. Groups under his baton have consistently received gold ratings at festivals and contests, including many with distinction. He is currently studying conducting with Dr. Kevin Holzman at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. In November, Angelo will be one of twelve conductors participating in Indiana University’s inaugural Art of Wind Conducting Workshop, a three-day intensive symposium focused on refining conducting through chamber music.
